An open letter to the National Weather Service

February 14 , 2022

Dear National Weather Service:

This letter concerns the weather forecast product that you delivered to Ann Arbor, Michigan, on February 2, 2022.

I recognize that you have taken great strides in recent years to improve the localization and accessibility of your forecasts, and to recast your practice of weather forecasting as the manufacture of Forecast Products for delivery to Customers. I also applaud your success at achieving a ubiquitous presence online and in various modes of social media, where your brand is well regarded and your products are regularly exchanged.

However, on Wednesday before last, I acquired one of your products directly from your website, and I found its quality to be extremely disappointing, as neither I nor any of my neighbors received the twelve to fifteen inches of snow that it promised.

On the gravity of your warning and the strength of your reputation, I was moved to make an urgent trip to the grocery store, braving the hordes of local residents who had all been similarly motivated. After standing in a long line of people who were stocking up on quantities of eggs and milk, and waking the next morning to a sunny sky that illuminated a paltry accumulation of barely five inches, I was forced to pickle 6 dozen eggs and take a milk bath.

Neither experience, although admittedly new, was particularly satisfying, leaving me with no recourse but to bring this error to your urgent and immediate attention, in the hopes that such a sequence of events should never find occasion to happen again.

I submit that a public retraction of your forecast for the Wednesday before last would be the only satisfactory resolution to your unfortunate issuance of this faulty product, as it would be an important gesture toward acknowledging the inconvenience that its defects visited upon the region, my neighbors, and myself.

Hoping that this matter may meet your timely attention, I remain

Your loyal customer,

A resident of Forecast Zone MIZ075.
